JOHN MCGRAW is the definitive biography of perhaps the greatest figure of the first decades of major league baseball. It is John McGraw the battling third baseman and leader of the legendary Baltimore Orioles of the 1890s, pioneers of the hit-and-run, cut-off throws, and other essential baseball strategies. And it is John McGraw the unyielding manager of the hugely successful New York Giants, they of the 10 pennants and eight second place finishes in McGraw’s 32 years. McGraw was feared and respected by his players and just feared by his opponents and umpires.
Award-winning baseball historian Charles Alexander recounts the life of the complex and elusive “Little Napoleon” on and off the field, as part of a meticulously researched history of the hard-nosed, vicious world of the first decades of professional baseball. First eBook edition.

John McGraw A Giant in His Time Summer Game Books Baseball Classic eBook Charles C Alexander

Well-research but unfortunately relies on a lot of secondary sources rather than original sources as no one is left to recount McGraw's contributions to the game.

Alexander did his best to recreate McGraw's character. We learn a good bit about his terrible temper and how he tried to intimidate umpires to see things his way.

I found interesting Alexander's delving into how gambling impacted the game with not even McGraw vulnerable on this matter. Having read this book one can understand how the White Sox scandel unfolded.

While I thought I knew a good deal about McGraw before reading the book, I have to say I know a great deal more about the man after reading the book. The author did a good job of portraying what the real McGraw was in terms of impacting the game.

John McGraw A Giant in His Time Summer Game Books Baseball Classic eBook Charles C Alexander Reviews

A great book for any student of baseball. McGraw was one of the prototype managers whose influence you can still see more than 100 years later. Alexander does a good job of providing insight and balance and brings the Deadball Era to life.
A solid biography of one of the giants (no pun intended) of baseball history, and one of the sport's greatest managers.
Fantastic stuff. I love the history tied in with the baseball, to give a clear picture of New York and just how big the Giants were.
Delivered ahead of schedule
This is the first book I have read from the many that Charles Alexander has written about turn of the century baseball players and I have to say that Mr. Alexander is a voracious researcher as he has facts and events of McGraw's life down to every little detail. For this, he is to be commended as he has certainly put to paper, atleast to this point, the definitive book on John McGraw.
However, this is not a short or an entertaining read by any stretch of the imagination as Alexander's book is decidedly bland in its detailed accounts of seasons past. After detailing McGraw's many outbursts on and off the field, Alexander chronicles McGraw's gambling misdeeds and even possible corruption (to the degree of the 1919 Black Sox). But Alexander does not write with a lot of imagination. His work reads exactly like you might expect a chronological account might vanilla.
Although I enjoyed reading this book and appreciated all of the facts and research Alexander did on McGraw, I cannot say that this is one of the better baseball books I have read. Still, it remains the only book of any substance on McGraw, so if you want to learn about one of the most important men in the history of baseball, this is your book.
Maybe he had a bigger influence in baseball than any non-player of his era and possibly even in any pursuant eras. We just don't have characters in baseball anymore as they did in his day.
Excellent book about the life and times of John McGraw. Charles Alexander has written a very good biography of McGraw and his life in baseball. The book flows very well. Alexander doesn't let the every day games and season bog down the narrative. He stays with the subject and gives a very good look at what made him what he was. You also get a good look at his life outside of baseball too. If you like baseball history and baseball as it was played in the early 20th century then you will love book.
John McGraw is in my opinion Mr. Baseball. He is a forerunner to the game of baseball. Surely, in this chronological biography about one of baseball's great's he has left a legacy with an impact on how baseball is played today.
If there is anything you want to know about baseball you have to read this historical, detailed account that shares and easily holds the attention of any fan.
John McGraw is a baseball genius, I give this book five stars, and I'm Marvin P. Ferguson, author of Boys On The Gold Coast.
